“Hey.” Warm hands took mine, making my eyes pop back open. Dex’s customary seriousness was replaced by concern. “What is it?”
I started to shake my head. “Nothing. Thank you for—”
“Princess.”
I looked away, my thoughts scattered by the warmth of his hands and the solidity of them holding me. “You… You’re all just so kind.”
He gave a small chuckle. “We could be assholes if it’d help? Hurr, hurr, woman. Where’s dinner?”
A laugh burst from me, and he smiled. I found myself smiling too.

Tears stung my eyes and I turned my face away. Exhaustion dragged at me, as if it was finally catching up after all the food and warmth of the evening, and it brought with it all the horrors that had come before.
